Dramatic Soteriology

Towards a theology of reconciliation

Classical soteriology has focused on the question of the redemption of sin and guilt, without considering the situation of the innocent victim of violence. At the same time, it has largely fueled a problematic concept of individualistic salvation. The reconciliation of the individual with God was theologically considered, without sufficiently taking into account the intersubjective dimension of the question. Against this background, a double correction is necessary: on the one hand, the fixation of soteriology on sin needs to be overcome and the situation of innocent and marginalised victims needs to be considered. On the other hand, it is necessary to break up the fixation of soteriology on the individualistic salvation and to include perpetrator-victim constellations into soteriological reflection. The project will contribute to the theology of reconciliation, starting with the debate between Jankélévitch and Derrida on the question of the possibility or impossibility of forgiveness of serious crimes.
